Ten Practical Lessons in Simple Instrument Making and Playing For Immediate Use in the Music and General Classroom
Featuring Roots of Rhythm author, master trainer, educator and ethnomusicologist

During each workshop, teachers will make, play and take five easy-to-make percussion instruments from around the world using the ground-breaking Roots of Rhythm curriculum. Teachers may take either workshop I or II or both workshops and pay only a slight materials fee (see below). Each day focuses on different lessons and both days include instruments and rhythms from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas. The curriculum, available for free here on this Web site, includes the following:
- Multidisciplinary lessons in music, science, math, geography, social studies and art
- Support for K-12 content standards in core academic subjects
- Lessons for use by general classroom teachers and music specialists
Workshop I
Friday, July 9, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Lunch 12-1:00 PM)
Make and play five instruments:
- Dondo - talking drum from Ghana, West Africa
- Ranat ek - xylophone from Thailand, Southeast Asia
- Buhai - friction drum from Romania, Europe
- Lakota drum - frame drum from South Dakota, U.S.
- Naqqara - kettledrums from Turkey, Middle East
Workshop II
Saturday, July 10, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (Lunch 12-1:00 PM)
Make and play five instruments:
- Djembe - goblet drum from Guinea, West Africa
- Kakko - double headed drum from Japan, East Asia
- Adufe - square drum from Portugal, Europe
- Bongo - drum set from Cuba, Middle America
- Sajat - cymbals from Egypt, Middle East
Bring to the workshop:
If you like bring a favorite drum (djembe, conga, etc.), one or two show and tell percussion instruments, a drum that might need minor fixing for Dr. Woodson's recommendations, and a box (2 cubic feet) for taking home instruments you will make during the workshop. Since some work will be done on the floor, wear appropriate clothing.

Materials Fee: Participation is free of charge except for a small supply fee which covers covers instrument making and educational materials for each workshop as follows:
$25 for one day only, either day
$45 for two days
